The Directors Guild of America Awards film nominees are out, with some surprising results.
Oscar frontrunners Damien Chazelle (“La La Land”), Kenneth Lonergan (“Manchester by the Sea”) and Barry Jenkins (“Moonlight”) are in. Denis Villeneuve and Garth Davis rounded out the list, for their films “Arrival” and “Lion,” respectively.
Notable omissions include Mel Gibson and Martin Scorsese, who many thought could catch up here.
Davis’ surprise inclusion is made all the more impressive considering he was nominated twice. Davis was also named as a nominee for the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in First-Time Feature Film award. Joining him are Kelly Fremon Craig (“Edge of Seventeen”), Tim Miller (“Deadpool”), Nate Parker (“The Birth of a Nation”) and Dan Trachtenberg (“10 Cloverfield Lane”).
Winners in all categories will be announced at the 69th Annual DGA Awards on Feb. 4 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Check out the full release at the DGA website.
