WATCH: ‘The Discovery’ Trailer With Robert Redford, Rooney Mara and Jason Segel

The Discovery

The first trailer for Charlie McDowell‘s “The Discovery” was just released ahead of its Sundance premiere. The film stars Robert Redford, Jason Segel and Rooney Mara.

Netflix will release the film March 31, 2017. It will also be receiving a limited 2017 theatrical release.

“The Discovery” is a sci-fi film set two years after the discovery that an afterlife has been scientifically proven, resulting in millions of people committing suicide in order to start over. Redford will play the man who made the discovery, while Segel plays his son. Mara is playing the woman with a tragic past whom Segel’s character falls in love with.

The film follows a script by McDowell and Justin Lader, and began filming in Rhode Island last spring. The film also stars Jesse Plemons, Riley Keough and Ron Canada.

James D. Stern (“Looper,” “An Education”), who is producing through Endgame Entertainment alongside Verisimilitude’s Alex Orlovsky (“The Place Beyond the Pines”), said of the project, “I couldn’t be happier to be working with Charlie. Robert Redford, Jason Segel and Rooney Mara are three exceptionally talented actors and make the project all the more exciting.”

This will be McDowell’s second feature film. His directorial debut, the critically acclaimed “The One I Love,” starred Mark Duplass and Elisabeth Moss.

Redford most recently received some Oscar buzz for his role in 2013’s “All Is Lost.” His most recent work was in “Pete’s Dragon” with Bryce Dallas Howard. He also has “Our Souls at Night” and “The Old Man and the Gun” out in 2017.

Mara, who received a Best Supporting Actress nod in 2016 for her role in “Carol,” has several big projects coming down the pipelines, including “Mary Magdalene” in which she plays the titular role of the famous Biblical figure.

Segel also gained critical acclaim for 2015’s “The End of the Tour.”
