Welcome back to Academy Idol X! It’s been a long road, but it’s time we name our top 3 films of 2016. Unfortunately, this means another film is going home, and our final 4 are all excellent films. We’ll also open up Academy Idol X Top 3 voting at the bottom of the page, so please vote to see which films will be our final two this year. Without further ado, here’s the results of the Top 4.
Results from the Top 4
It’s been a very tight race so far, and that did not end in the Top 4. The film that will be sent home this week lost by only a single vote. Our Top 4 films of Academy Idol X were: “Arrival,” “Manchester by the Sea,” “Moonlight” and “Silence.” With director week as our theme, it seemed like readers responded with support for the two frontrunners for the Oscar. “Arrival” and “Moonlight” were safe by a very significant margin.
This left us with a bottom two of “Manchester by the Sea” and “Silence.” On one hand, “Manchester” is directed by Kenneth Lonergan, who received an Oscar, DGA and Globe nomination for his direction. On the other hand, “Silence” is directed by the iconic Martin Scorsese. This week’s eliminated film is…..”Manchester by the Sea.” Unfortunately, the six-time nominated film is going home after significant momentum. It even took home Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor awards at 2016 ACCA. However, the support for “Silence” has been strong throughout this year’s Academy Idol, so we’re left with our top 3.
Academy Idol X Top 3 Voting Opens
We’re now down to our Top 3, and what a top 3 it is. “Arrival,” “Moonlight” and “Silence” all have strong support in our community, and it has continued here on Academy Idol. This week, our theme is favorite performance. We want you to single out your favorite performance from each film, and let us know which performances stood out to you in the comments. Then vote on which film you think contains the best singular performance of the three. Here are a few to keep in mind as you get started.
The Final 3
Driven by an amazing performance from Amy Adams, “Arrival” has become a community favorite. ACCA rewarded Adams with a nomination for Best Lead Actress as a result, despite the snub from Oscar. It would be unfair to say that the film is without any other solid performances though. You could also support Jeremy Renner, Forrest Whitaker or Michael Stuhlbarg‘s supporting performances as well.
Full of career best performances, “Moonlight” is the definition of an ensemble piece. Mahershala Ali won ACCA for Best Supporting Actor, and looks poised to win the Oscar. Naomie Harris also picked up an ACCA nomination in supporting actress. Don’t count out Trevante Rhodes, who was also named one of our breakthrough performers of 2016. Andre Holland, Ashton Sanders, Alex R. Hibbert and Janelle Monae also give excellent performances when called upon. It was a true ensemble, which also happened to be one of the ACCAs it took home.
Last but not least, “Silence” is chalk full of great performances. The two most lauded performances in the film are Andrew Garfield‘s performance as a priest struggling through torture, and Issei Ogata‘s “villain” of the film. Both deliver dynamite performances, and have received considerable acclaim because of this. Also of note are the always excellent Liam Neeson and Adam Driver, the latter of whom continues his upward trajectory.
