OSCARS 2017: A Peek at the Ballots #4 (Female Voter Over 40) – Adores ‘Fences’ and Denzel Washington

Speaking with voters for the Academy Awards can offer some wonderous insight.  Speaking with an older female voter, who only agreed to share her major categories with me, along with very few tech choices, she ended up pouring her heart out about her feelings about “La La Land,” Damien Chazelle, and the powerhouse performances in Denzel Washington’s “Fences” and her adoration for the source material.

Read through some of her interview down below.

OSCAR VOTER #3 – FEMALE (Over 40)

  • BEST PICTURE“La La Land”
  1. “La La Land”
  2. “Fences”
  3. “Moonlight”

“The arts are so important.  I know so many people with access to the best teachers and leaders in our industry, and they don’t take advantage of it.  And here their children are, thinking they are just going to waltz into Hollywood, and someone is going to hand them a career.  It doesn’t work like that.  Hollywood doesn’t work like that.  And these children are suffering for their parent’s neglect.  The reason I’m saying this is because “La La Land” shows these children the hurt, and the pain that can come from being a part of films.  There are sacrifices that are going to be made.  You might have to give up time with your friends or you have to chase your dreams when your family tells you not to.  There’s value in that.  We are so lucky that a young film director wanted to show us the truth.”

  • BEST DIRECTOR – Damien Chazelle, “La La Land”
  • BEST ACTOR – Denzel Washington, “Fences”

“I have admired Denzel Washington for so many years.  What he did with August Wilson’s play is so respectful.  He would be so proud of him.  August’s play captures a demographic, and a tone that we don’t see enough.  Denzel Washington had me terrified of this man.  I wasn’t just afraid for myself…I was afraid for his wife, and his son, and this baby that was going to have him as a father.  And then when he dies, and it’s like, I miss him.  And you miss him.  And I want him back.”

  • BEST ACTRESS – Meryl Streep, “Florence Foster Jenkins”

“Meryl Streep is the best actress we’ve ever had.  It’s truly a privilege to watch her in anything she does.  I take my job very seriously and I always respect a person that continues to do new things, and push themselves.  Meryl is pushing herself.  All the time.”

  • BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR – Michael Shannon, “Nocturnal Animals”

“He is such a talented actor.  I really enjoyed many parts, I have to stress, parts, of “Nocturnal Animals.”  The parts I did like were the ones where Michael Shannon and Jake Gyllenhaal were on screen together.”

  • BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS – Viola Davis, “Fences”

“Denzel Washington and Viola Davis go together.  You don’t vote for one of them and not include the other.  She is so good and takes over.  And she’s taking it from Denzel Washington!  You know, she really deserves and I hope she gets it.”

  • BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY – Taylor Sheridan, “Hell or High Water”

“It’s a very subtle, entertaining movie about injustice in pursuit of justice.  It is witty, and smart, and just keeps your attention on these men the entire time.”

  • BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY – Barry Jenkins, Tarell McCraney, “Moonlight”

“I…loved…”Moonlight.”  I fell in love with these two boys, who later become two men.  It was a well done love story, and unlike any other movie I saw.”

  • BEST ANIMATED FEATURE – “Zootopia”

“Such a phenomenal movie.  I liked how the fox and rabbit interact.  I liked how funny, and moving it was.  But I have to say, I really liked “My Life as a Zucchini.”  I cried quite a bit in that one.”

  • BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN“Hail, Caesar!”

“I didn’t really like the movie that much but I really liked the sets.”

  • BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY“La La Land”

“The opening musical number is marvelous and it all just blends together.  I loved how the camera just smoothly moved in and out of a scene.  Remember that scene where Ryan sings the “City of Stars” song?  Everything just flows together.”

  • BEST ORIGINAL SCORE“La La Land”
