OSCARS: Charlize Theron’s Multiple Producing Projects and the “Double Troubles”

Over the past few days, the WAY TOO EARLY Oscar Predictions for 2018 have been updated category by category.

In case you missed it, the first guesses for PICTURE, DIRECTOR, LEAD ACTOR, LEAD ACTRESS, SUPPORTING ACTOR, and SUPPORTING ACTRESS have been unveiled.

Commentary is included at the top of each category page.

Speaking as a whole, there’s lots to be excited about this year.

Academy Award winner Charlize Theron is producing three projects this year: “Atomic Blonde” from David Leitch, “Tully” from Jason Reitman, and the untitled Nash Edgerton project.  Oscar winning producer Scott Rudin is also back with three projects including Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut “Lady Bird.”

We have lots of “double trouble” possibilities this year.  Matt Damon has “Downsizing” from Alexander Payne and “Suburbicon” from George Clooney.  Recent nominee Andrew Garfield will be back with “Under the Silver Lake” and “Breathe” while Saoirse Ronan lands in three films this year.  One of the big snubs of 2015 Idris Elba, will be showing his chops teamed up with Aaron Sorkin (“Molly’s Game”), Hany Abu-Assad (“The Mountain Between Us”), and two potential blockbusters.

Speaking of blockbusters, if 2015 showed us anything, you can get nominated for any performance, no matter how deep into the franchise you are.  That’s why we are heavily considering Mark Hamill and the late Carrie Fisher for their upcoming works in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”  Is it particularly likely?  Probably not, but in March, anything is possible.

There are plenty of films and people that are not on the list (or mentioned in this piece) because we either didn’t get wind of it yet, or they’re in the minds of the studios and producers that are about to release them.  Also, we have way too much road left to touch on “everything.”
