Over the past ten years, no genre has received more of a boost than science fiction. It seems like sci-fi continues to be the birthplace for new and emerging talent in the director’s chair. The class of master directors – including Alfonso Cuarón, Denis Villeneuve and Christopher Nolan – not only frequent the genre, but continue to break ground within it. More emerging talents like Shane Carruth and Alex Garland are gaining strong followings due to their work. It’s fair to say that the genre may be at its strongest since the late 1970s and early 1980s.
In the next few weeks, we see a handful of sci-i flicks coming to the big screen. Not only do we get “Life,” and “Ghost in the Shell” in the next two weeks, but “Alien: Covenant” and “Blade Runner 2049” loom on the horizon. Considering the strong state of the genre, we’ve compiled a list of the top 10 sci-fi films since 2000.
Narrowing down the genre to the ten best films was incredibly tough given the quality available. For that reason, we’re going to start with honorable mentions. For the purposes of this list, superhero films were not included.
Honorable Mentions for the Best Sci-Fi Films Since 2000:
“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens“
