Hot on the heels of winning the Best Director Oscar for “La La Land,” filmmaker Damien Chazelle is putting together his next project. It’s set to be the Neil Armstrong biopic “First Man,” which will re-team Chazelle with star Ryan Gosling, who is playing Armstrong. Now, a trio of other actors have come aboard the project.
Reports (here, here, and here) have Kyle Chandler, Jason Clarke, and Corey Stoll being added to the cast. “First Man” will have Chandler playing Deke Slayton, Clarke playing Ed White, and Stoll playing the legendary Buzz Aldrin. All of them were involved in the space race and took part in eventually getting Armstrong on to the moon. The concept of Gosling and Stoll playing that famous pair is pretty compelling, that’s for sure. Overall though, this cast is coming together very nicely.
Getting to see Gosling go for Oscar gold as Armstrong will be one of the main selling points of “First Man”. Additionally, it’ll be interesting to see Chazelle go in this very high profile prestige direction. Will he be able to work in some jazz too? Stay tuned to find out, though considering he’s directing but not writing (that falls to Josh Singer), perhaps that won’t be the case? This movie is set to be released on October 12th of next year, right in the heart of awards season. The Academy could certainly fall in love with this one, though that’s a long way off.
