This week, Disney released the first teaser trailer for “A Wrinkle in Time.”
The film is based on the classic children’s novel by Madeline L’Engle. It is the story Meg and her brother Charles, who go on a search through space for their missing father, Dr. Alex Murray, after being visited by three strange beings.
Meg is played by Storm Reid, who made her feature film debut in 2013’s “12 Years a Slave.” She has appeared in a number of television series and films. “A Wrinkle in Time” will mark her first leading role. Her brother Charles is played by newcomer Deric McCabe.
The film’s cast is boosted by many big name stars. Dr. Alex Murray, Meg’s father, is played by Chris Pine. The three beings that help the children, Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which, are played by Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, and Oprah Winfrey. Other stars lending their talents include Zach Galifianakis, André Holland, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw.
Ava DuVernay directed the film. She was most recently nominated for an Academy Award for her documentary “13th,” but made a name for herself in Hollywood with the Best Picture nominated “Selma.” This is her fourth feature film. She will soon direct a TV movie for HBO.
The film was written by Jennifer Lee, who won an Oscar for her work on “Frozen.” She also penned “Wreck-It Ralph” and received story credit for “Zootopia.”
Disney has plans to release a number of live action films with release dates stretching to 2021. Aside from MCU films, the studio is working on live action remakes of classic films including “Dumbo,” “Mulan,” and “Aladdin.” “A Wrinkle in Time” is not a remake of a classic Disney film, but is part of a growing list of live action movies the studio plans to bring to theaters.
The film will be released on March 9, 2018.
