The biopic, “On the Basis of Sex” comes from Focus Features and Participant Media. It is the story of Justice Ginsberg’s career-spanning fight for equal rights. Ginsberg was appointed to the US Supreme Court by President Bill Clinton in 1993. Her appointment made her the second woman to sit on the Supreme Court, 12 years after Sandra Day O’Connor. She is still active on the bench, and is the third longest-serving current justice.
The casting news comes just days after it was announced that Felicity Jones will star in a new adaptation of “Swan Lake.” Jones was nominated for an Academy Award for her role as Jane Hawking in the Stephen Hawking biopic, “The Theory of Everything.” She also starred in last year’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and “A Monster Calls.”
There is no word yet on co-stars, or even which people from Justice Ginsberg’s life will appear in the film. The script was written by Daniel Stiepleman, and was listed on 2014’s Black List as one of the year’s best unproduced scripts.
“On the Basis of Sex” is directed by Mimi Leder. Leder is the director of several television series and feature films. She most recently completed work on the HBO drama “The Leftovers.” She directed 10 episodes while also serving as an Executive Producer. Leder won two Primetime Emmys during her time on the popular series “ER.” And, she also directed films including “Deep Impact” and “Pay It Forward.”
The film is scheduled to begin shooting this fall, with a release sometime in 2018.
