Brie Larson to Fight Skrulls in ‘Captain Marvel,’ Film to be Set in 1990s

New details about Marvel’s “Captain Marvel” were revealed over the weekend at SDCC, and they give us a better idea of what to expect from the lesser known superhero. The film will be set in the 1990s, which gives “Captain Marvel” room to grow and develop outside of other recent Marvel films. Captain Marvel, who will be played by Brie Larson (“Room”), will also be fighting comic-book baddies the Skrulls, an alien race that have invaded Earth’s population. Oh, and a two-eyed Nick Fury will also appear in the film as a young SHIELD agent, played once more by Samuel L. Jackson (“The Hateful Eight”).

As The Verge points out, setting “Captain Marvel” in a time period of her very own gives the hero time to “establish [herself] as a powerful force to be reckoned with in her own right.” The film will be the first female-led Marvel flick, which makes “Captain Marvel” an even more anticipated and heavily scrutinized by Marvel fans.

Marvel intends to deliver on its expectations, according to Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, who promises that “[Captain Marvel] will be by far the strongest character we’ve ever had.” Marvel has previously drawn the ire of fangirls who were frustrated by the lack of female superhero films from Marvel. The studio, which is now owned by Disney, previously made headlines after then-CEO Ike Perlmutter told Sony CEO Michael Lynton he didn’t believe more female-led movies should be green-lit.

Feige, Marvel’s new CEO, said he’s also invested in making a desperately wanted Black Widow solo movie, though Marvel has already announced its films in production up until 2019. Who knows if Scarlet Johansson, who currently plays Black Widow, will still be interested in playing the role several years from now.

On a lighter note, Larson tweeted pictures of the Marvel panel at SDCC, which revealed concept art of Captain Marvel’s uniform. See the pics below.

“Captain Marvel” hits theaters March 2019.
