Amy Schumer (“Trainwreck”) is heading to Broadway. The comedienne is set to star in Steve Martin’s “Meteor Shower,” the legendary comedian and musician’s second Broadway play, according to THR.
Schumer joins a well-known cast of comedians, including Keegan-Michael Key (“Key & Peele”), Laura Benanti (“Supergirl”) and Alan Tudyk (“Rogue One”). It will be Schumer and Key’s first Broadway appearances. The production will be directed by Jerry Zaks (“Marvin’s Room”), with the script written by Martin.
The play had productions in San Diego and New Haven before making it way to Broadway, where it’s now being reworked to fit the fame of its venue. “Meteor Shower” was apparently a labor of love that fell to the wayside years ago, according to an interview from the NY Times. Martin said of the new production:
I can’t tell you how excited I am. I’ve been working on this for over 20 years — I wrote it in the ’90s, when it is set, but I didn’t finish it, I got distracted, and then it came back to me a couple of years ago.
The show follows a dinner party gone hilariously wrong that uncovers the anxieties and fears of a modern marriage. Wife Corky (Schumer) and husband Norm (Tudyk) have a fellow couple over to dinner, played by Benanti and Key. However, the visiting pair aren’t just looking for a boring meal with polite conversation, and the group finds itself in a situation falling apart as fast as the meteors hurtling through the atmosphere.
“Meteor Shower” officially opens Nov. 29, but previews begin Nov. 1 at the Booth Theatre.
