The Force is with us, “Star Wars” fans, we’re getting another “Star Wars” film with a little help from director Stephen Daldry (“The Hours”). According to THR, Daldry is in early talks with Lucasfilm to direct a stand-alone film on Obi-Wan Kenobi. If Daldry signs on, he would oversee the writing and development of the film’s story, along with Lucasfilm higher-ups.
The proposed film project is just one of several stand-alone film projects in the “Star Wars” ‘verse. According to THR, stand-alones focusing on Yoda and Boba Fett are being considered, among other beloved characters. The film project would follow critically acclaimed “Rogue One: A Star War’s Story” and an upcoming Han Solo film, set for release next year.
Obi-Wan Kenobi is a powerful Jedi who mentors two major players in the “Star Wars” ‘verse. In the prequel trilogy, he’s a powerful warrior (Ewan McGregor,”American Pastoral”) who mentors Anakin Skywalker, pre-Dark Side. Devastated by his student’s betrayal, the Jedi takes Vader’s infant son, Luke, to the deserts of Tatooine and becomes a hermit (Alec Guiness, “Doctor Zhivago”), protecting his young charge from afar. When the galaxy needs a savior in Episodes IV-VI, he also takes Luke under his wing. As Kenobi is an integral but often mysterious character, a stand-alone film could be worthwhile. McGregor has previously said he’d be up for playing Kenobi again, but at this time, no actors are attached to the film project.
Daldry is a theater and film director who shot to fame with his feature film debut “Billy Elliot. He also helmed critically-acclaimed dramas “The Hours” and “The Reader,” along with several episodes of “The Crown.” He’s repped by CAA.
