Steve Carell to Campaign in Lead Actor for ‘Last Flag Flying’ with Amazon Studios Stacked Slate

Amazon Studios just released their screenings and awards slate via their For Your Consideration site.  With features and documentaries alike, the studio has confirmed that Academy Award nominee Steve Carell will campaign in Lead Actor for his upcoming performance in “Last Flag Flying” from Richard Linklater.  His co-stars, Oscar-nominees Bryan Cranston and Laurence Fishburne will try their luck in Supporting Actor.

For months, the Twittersphere and internet message boards had been lighting up claiming that either from an early script read or test screenings, Carell would undoubtedly go Supporting and Cranston would “run the lead actor race.”  A representative for Fox Searchlight confirmed to Awards Circuit a few weeks ago that he would also campaign Lead for his work in “Battle of the Sexes.”  Since then, there has been chatter that it could be changing but no official word as of yet.

Future Oscar-winner for “Last Flag Flying?”

An interesting addition to the conversation is that Amazon Studios also listed the great Academy Award-nominated actress Cicely Tyson in Supporting Actress for “Last Flag Flying.”  Not sure if many of us were aware she was in the film, but now that she has a listing, should we be anticipating her to make an impact on the weak Supporting Actress race?

Other things worth noting on Amazon’s slate:

They have other big movies in their arsenal; “Wonder Wheel” from Woody Allen, where Kate Winslet will try to win a second Oscar perhaps?  Early word suggests it.  Co-stars Justin Timberlake, Jim Belushi, and Juno Temple will all campaign Supporting.

Todd Haynes’ “Wonderstruck” is trying to gain some traction.  The young Oakes Fegley will campaign Lead but in a surprising turn of events, his co-star Millicent Simmonds will campaign alongside Oscar-winner Julianne Moore in Supporting.

The Big Sick” gets all the expected listings for the film including a Supporting Actor and Actress push for Ray Romano and Holly Hunter.  Surprisingly, they’ve decided to push Zoe Kazan in Lead Actress despite her being in a coma for more than half the movie.  Doesn’t really matter since

Mike White’s “Brad’s Status” gets a listing for Ben Stiller in Lead Actor while his co-stars Austin Abrams and Jenna Fischer get the bill in Supporting Actor and Actress.

A film that has been slowly creeping up the buzzmeter is Matt Ruskin’s “Crown Heights” which is receiving an Oscar campaign.  Lakeith Stanfield will try his luck in Lead Actor while his co-star Natalie Paul will try her luck in the very competitive Lead Actress race.  Nnamdi Asomugha will campaign in Supporting Actor while Marsha Stephanie Blake will campaign in Supporting Actress.

James Gray’s “The Lost City of Z,” which premiered at the New York Film Festival in 2016 is hoping to not be forgotten.  Charlie Hunnam and Sienna Miller are throwing their hats in the Lead races while Robert Pattinson hopes to take some of his goodwill surrounding “Good Time” and making a Supporting play.

Documentaries are plentiful with the streaming service as “City of Ghosts” is listed with an Original Song titled “Broken Wing.”  They also have Ai Weiwei’s “Human Flow” and Amir Bar-Lev’s “Long Strange Trip.”

Where do you think these films stack up in the Oscar race?  Let us know in the comments!
