David Oyelowo Signs on to Disney Musical From Tarell Alvin McCraney

David Oyelowo of “Selma” fame is set to star in a live-action Disney musical. The actor will helm “Cyrano The Moor,” penned by “Moonlight” screenwriter Tarell Alvin McCraney. According to THR, Oyelowo will also produce the film alongside his wife, actor Jessica Oyelowo (“A United Kingdom”), and Yoruba Saxon (“A United Kingdom”). Tendo Nagenda and Chaz Salembier will oversee for Disney.

“Cyrano The Moor” is a marrying of William Shakespeare’s “Othello” and the French play “Cyrano de Bergerac.” “Othello” is a revenge story of love interrupted, while “Cyrano de Bergarec” features a large-nosed romantic who uses his writing skills to help another man win the heart of the woman he also loves. (Think Steve Martin’s 1987 “Roxanne,” but French and a little more high-brow.) How the stories will be meshed is yet to be explained, but the premise is certainly intriguing.

“Cyrano The Moor” will be another live-action musical in the works over at Disney, who has been recreating some of their classic animated films. Their past live-action reboots, including “Maleficent,” “Cinderella” and “Beauty and the Beast” have been roaring successes, with the latter pulling in $1.26 billion worldwide. Next up on the list is Guy Ritchie’s embattled “Aladdin” live-action remake, set to premiere in 2019. Unlike its predecessors, “Cyrano The Moor” won’t be an update of a classic Disney film. The live-action musical will be newer ground for the studio.

Oyelowo previously worked with Disney for Lupita Nyong’o’s “Queen of Katwe.” Audiences will see him next in Doug Liman’s “Chaos Walking.”

No further casting details or premiere date have been announced for “Cyrano The Moor.”
