WATCH: Natalie Portman Searches for Answers in First Trailer for ‘Annihilation’

Paramount Pictures released a teaser trailer for the science fiction film “Annihilation.”

Based on a trilogy of novels from Jeff VanderMeer, “Annihilation” is the story of a biologist who signs up for a dangerous secret mission. Her journey is further complicated when her husband becomes ill, she discovers a strange creature, and the disappearances start.

Natalie Portman stars as the biologist. Fresh off of her third Academy Award nomination for last year’s “Jackie,” this is one of four projects she has coming out in the next several months. Portman won an Oscar for her role in Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan” in 2010. The former child star has had a wide-ranging career thus far.

Joining Portman’s expedition as the psychologist is Academy Award nominee Jennifer Jason Leigh. Leigh was nominated for her role in Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight.” The nomination came as part of a resurgence for the actress, who has been performing onscreen since the late 1970s. In addition to film work, she recently completed the newest season of “Twin Peaks” for Showtime.

Tessa Thompson is the surveyor. Most of Thompson’s career has been in television. She started with roles on “Veronica Mars” and “Heroes.” She also appeared in the Emmy nominated series “Westworld.” Though most of Thompson’s work has been in television, she has collected a number of film credits, too. She will soon be seen fighting alongside Thor in “Thor: Ragnarok.”

Another “Star Wars” alum joins the cast. Oscar Isaac plays the biologist’s husband. The Golden Globe winner for “Show Me a Hero” has worked nonstop since his breakthrough performance in “Inside Llewyn Davis.” Before the year is out, he will be in theaters with “Suburbicon” and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”

“Annihilation” also stars Golden Globe winner Gina Rodriguez (“Jane the Virgin”) as the only named character, Anya Thorensen.

Alex Garland wrote and directed the film. After receiving an Academy Award nomination for his directorial debut “Ex Machina,” he follows with this adaptation. Garland also wrote the cult hits “28 Days Later” and “Sunshine,” both of which had strong psychological tones in their sci fi narratives.

“Annihilation” will be in theaters February 23, 2018.
