Welcome back to Halloween Madness 2017! Before we launch into Halloween Madness 2017 Round 2, we have to quickly go over the first round’s results. Some were surprising, to say the least, while others took care of business. The first round went mostly chalk, but there were a couple upsets to kick us off for another spooky year! We’re covering the results first, with the voting for Round 2 at the bottom of the page. Best of luck and have a great time voting!
The Hitchcock Division
Out the gate, we had a few tight matches. The closest match of the division was between Ghostface from the “Scream” franchise and the vote in nominee, the “It Follows” ghost known as The Entity. Ghostface held on, but the new horror favorite made it much closer than expected, 53 to 47.
A horror icon went down in this division as well. “The Creature from the Black Lagoon” or Gill-Man, was easily bested by Samara from “The Ring” franchise (68% to 32%). While there are a lot of fans of “Creature,” Samara is a more present film in today’s pop culture. Even with a subpar film out this year, “The Ring” still has some of the most iconic moments of horror in the 21st century.
Last, there was a battle between 1980s movie monsters. Brundlefly from David Cronenberg’s “The Fly” took on the somewhat adorable Stripe from “Gremlins.” The match was close, but Brundlefly ultimately prevailed, 53% to 47%. One of the films is definitely more in the horror camp, but Stripe was an enduring creature from the 1980s. However, he never has moments as gross as Brundlefly’s evolution.
Other results from the Hitchcock Division:
Leatherface defeats Pumpkinhead from “Pumpkinhead” 92% to 8%.
Chucky defeats The Crawlers from “The Descent,” 63% to 37%.
The Shark/Bruce from “Jaws” defeats The Beast from “Poltergeist,” 73% to 27%.
Michael Myers from “Halloween” defeats Asami Yamazaki from “Audition,” 83% to 17%.
The Deadites from “Evil Dead” defeats Eli from “Let the Right One In,” 62% to 38%.
The Carpenter Division
The biggest news coming out of the Carpenter Division in Round 1 was the performance of our vote in candidate. In a very close round, Pennywise from 2017’s “It” topped horror icon Dracula. In a final score of 53% to 47%, Pennywise proved he’ll be a force moving deeper into the competition, with Jigsaw next on his list.
Dracula was not the only Universal icon in a tough match this round. Imotep from “The Mummy” films was locked in a duel with The Cult from “Rosemary’s Baby.” Unfortunately for the Mummy, The Cult proved too persuasive for the audience and took the match 51% to 49%. This was the closest match of the entire first round.
Other results from the Carpenter Divison:
Freddy Krueger from “A Nightmare on Elm Street” defeats the Phantom of the Opera, 78% to 22%.
Damien from “The Omen” defeats Pinhead from “Hellraiser,” 67% to 33%.
Jigsaw from the “Saw” franchise defeats The Lipstick Faced Demons from “Insidious,” 76% to 24%.
Jason Vorhees from the “Friday the 13th” franchise tops Gweomul from “The Host” 84% to 16%.
Carrie from “Carrie” defeats “The Wolf Man” 78% to 22%.
Jack Torrence from “The Shining” defeats Bagul from “Sinister,” 94% to 6%
The Lugosi Divison
The Luguosi Division was different than other divisions based on the one-sided nature of the wins. While every other division had some close matches, none really qualified as close in the Lugosi. There were 4 monsters that picked up at least 80% of the vote, and the smallest margin of victory was 30%. With no real spotlight matchups in Round 1, this was an easy division to predict.
Results from the Lugosi Division:
Hannibal Lecter from “Silence of the Lambs” defeats “The Birds,” 92% to 8%.
Regan from “The Exorcist” defeats “The Critters” 94% to 6%.
Annie Wilkes from “Misery” defeats The Infected from “28 Days Later,” 75% to 25%.
“The Thing” defeats Gamush from “Drag Me to Hell” 80% to 20%.
The Pale Man from “Pan’s Labyrinth” defeats David/the Werewolf from “American Werewolf in London” 72% to 28%.
John Doe from “Se7en” defeats Zhul from “Ghostbusters” 81% to 19%.
Frankenstein’s Monster defeats “Annabelle” 65% to 35%.
“Predator” defeats Bathsheba from “The Conjuring” 64% to 36%.
The Craven Division
There was one upset in the Craven division, while other high seeds took care of business. An early “upset” was The Blair Witch taking down Alex Forrest from “Fatal Attraction.” With a score of 58% to 42%, the Blair Witch continues to be a popular character despite negative reactions towards the most recent film.
Count Orlok from “Nosferatu” faced a tougher than expected matchup against vote-in Black Philip from “The Witch.” While the Count is certainly an icon of the genre, the most popular goat on film made a strong push. It wasn’t quite enough, with Orlok holding off Philip, 57% to 43%.
Other results from the Craven Division:
Xenomorphs from “The Alien” Franchise defeated “Candyman” 91% to 9%.
Buffalo Bill from “Silence of the Lambs” defeats The Sanderson Sisters from “Hocus Pocus” 83% to 17%.
Norman Bates from “Psycho” defeats The Buckner Family from “Cabin in the Woods” 88% to 12%.
George A. Romero’s Zombies from “The Living Dead” franchise defeats Cesare from “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, 80% to 20%.
The Babadook defeats Helena from “Susperia” 80% to 20%.
Round 2 Opens Up!
With round 1 in the books, it’s time to vote for 2nd round matchups! There are some great ones coming up this round, and while there were few upsets in the 1st round, I expect there could be a lot more this time. The winners advance to the Sweet 16, so choose wisely!
