George Clooney to Receive 46th AFI Life Achievement Award

Academy Award-winning actor George Clooney will receive the 46th AFI Life Achievement Award. The Gala Tribute and presentation is scheduled for Los Angeles on June 7, 2018.

The celebrated actor and director has been a steady force in Hollywood for decades. He began his career with bit roles in television movies in the late 70s and early 80s. Things started to turn for him when he landed a part on the ill-fated 1984 sitcom “E/R.” The next year, he joined the cast of the popular sitcom “The Facts of Life,” where he played sarcastic handyman George.

Throughout the years, he continued to appear in a variety of television series and movies. Some of his credits include recurring roles on “Roseanne” and “Sisters.”

His life and career changed in September of 1994 when NBC debuted the primetime drama “ER.” The series was an instant hit with viewers, and Clooney’s Dr. Doug Ross became a fan favorite. He stayed with the Emmy-winning show until departing in the middle of the fifth season.

In the years after leaving “ER,” Clooney successfully transitioned to the big screen with films such as “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” That was his first collaboration with the Coen Brothers. He also took up the lead role in a remake of “Ocean’s 11,” tried his hand at voice work in “The Fantastic Mr. Fox,” and partnered with the Coen Brothers again for four more films.

He received an Academy Award for his supporting role in “Syriana.” He was also nominated for his Best Actor in “Michael Clayton,” “Up in the Air,” and “The Descendants.”

Clooney also stepped behind the camera, making his directorial debut with “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” in 2002. He has since directed five additional films. The 2005 McCarthy-era drama “Good Night, and Good Luck” garnered 6 Academy Award nominations. Clooney received his first nomination for Best Director.

His next directorial effort and Coen collaboration, “Suburbicon,” will be in theaters later this month.
