WATCH: First Trailer for Disney’s ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ Premieres during AMAs

Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time” has just released its first full-length trailer during the American Music Awards. The preview is a star-studded closer look at a story of legendary proportions, featuring the likes of Oprah Winfrey (“The Immortal life of Henrietta Lacks”), Reese Witherspoon (“Big Little Lies”) and Mindy Kaling (“The Mindy Project”).

The film, an adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s beloved novel, follows the precocious Meg Murry who sets off on a search to find her father. The young adventurer partners up with her young friend Calvin and her brother Charles Wallace as they journey through space to find the missing scientist. The trio are aided on their journey by Mrs. Which, Mrs. Whatsit and Mrs. Who (Winfrey, Witherspoon and Kaling), who see the kids as warriors of light who must defeat an approaching darkness. Will the warriors reach Meg’s father and rescue him from the evil energy before it’s too late?

“A Wrinkle in Time” stars Storm Reid (“12 Years a Slave”) as Meg, with Levi Miller (“Pan”) and Deric McCabe (“Stephanie”) costarring as Calvin and Charles. Chris Pine (“Wonder Woman”) plays Meg’s wayward father Dr. Alex Murry, with Zach Galifianakis (“The Hangover”) as The Happy Medium and Michael Peña (“The Martian”) as Red. Critically acclaimed director Ava DuVernay (“Selma”) directs off an adapted screenplay by Jennifer Lee (“Frozen”). An teaser trailer for the film was released back in July, according to CNet.

While each frame of the trailer is full of familiar faces, I was blown away by the wondrous costumes from Oscar-nominated designer Paco Delgado (“The Danish Girl”) and stunning special effects. As “A Wrinkle in Time” is set in a vibrant, fantastical version of space, each character is outfitted with the appropriate finery, and the CGI blends seamlessly into the journey. At the very least, “A Wrinkle in Time” should be getting Oscar nods for costuming and special effects if the trailer is a halfway decent peek at the full film.

“A Wrinkle in Time” hits theaters March 9, 2018. Watch the official trailer below.
