Jordan Peele, Emily V. Gordon, and Others React to Spirit Award Nominations

The 2018 Independent Spirit Award nominations were announced Tuesday morning, and a number of excited filmmakers took a minute or two to share their thoughts.

Distributor A24 was well represented with 17 overall nominations. They received multiple nods each for “The Florida Project,” “Good Time,” “The Killing of the Sacred Deer,” and “Lady Bird.” Single nominations also went to James Franco in “The Disaster Artist,” “The Lovers” for screenplay, and “Menashe” for Best First Feature.

The second most nominated distributor was Sony Pictures Classics, whose film, “Call Me By Your Name,” leads the pack with six nominations, including Lead and Supporting Male, Director, and Feature. Sony also surprised with four nominations for “The Rider.”

Some of the nominees couldn’t hold back their excitement and thanks, and shared their thoughts on Twitter.

Jordan Peele has stirred the conversation in recent days over “Get Out” competing for a Golden Globe nomination in the Comedy category. Whether you agree or disagree, the horror film’s five nominations were a welcome reward for a film that has stayed in the awards conversation all year.

The Big Sick” received two nominations, for Best First Screenplay and Supporting Female (Holly Hunter). Emily V. Gordon shared her thoughts:

Matt Spicer, director of “Ingrid Goes West,” was nominated for Best First Screenplay and First Feature. He wrote:

And Justin Chon, writer and director of “Gook” was nominated for Kiehl’s Someone to Watch Award:

The 2018 Independent Spirit Awards will be broadcast live on IFC, Saturday, March 3, 2018. Following tradition, the Spirit Awards presentation is held the day before the Academy Awards.

Nick Kroll and John Mulaney will return to host for a second year in a row.
