The first, full-length trailer for Steven Spielbierg’s “Ready Player One” hit the internet this Sunday with a closer look at OASIS and a treasure trove of 1980’s easter eggs. A new poster for the film (pictured below) was also released, inspiring fans to Photoshop their own takes on Tye Sheridan’s (“X-Men: Apocalypse”) mysteriously long leg. Is it a mistake or yet another layer of intrigue in the techno-dystopia?
Based upon Ernest Cline’s 2011 novel of the same name, “Ready Player One” follows Wade Watts, a passionate gamer with a nostalgic love of the 80s. The world has outgrown its square footage, and humanity has gone online to carve out communities free of the clutter and pollution around them. But things turn to action-packed intrigue after OASIS’ creator James Halliday dies, willing OASIS to the player who can find some special easter eggs hidden in the online world. Will Watts and his friends find the easter eggs before those who would use OASIS for evil?
The trailer is a much longer look at the upcoming film in comparison to the earlier SDCC teaser, which explained the film’s premise but didn’t go into as much detail. According to Comicbook, the trailer is as packed with easter eggs as the OASIS, pointing out references to Tracer from “Overwatch”, Harley Quinn from the “Arkham” game and the DeLorean from “Back to the Future.” My personal favorites were Watt’s love for Bruce Banner and Peter Parker, which inspired Will Watt’s namesake (and his determination to protect the OASIS from evil).
Starring alongside Sheridan are Olivia Cooke (“Me and Earl and the Dying Girl”), Ben Mendelsohn (“Rogue One”) and T.J. Miller (“Deadpool”), with Simon Pegg (“Star Trek”) and Mark Rylance (“Dunkirk”) also featuring. Spielberg directs off a script from Cline and Zak Penn (“The Avengers”).
“Ready Player One” hits theaters March 30, 2018. Watch the second trailer below.
