Paramount Pictures continues to ramp up anticipation for their new sci fi thriller, “Annihilation.”
On Wednesday, the studio released a new trailer. This time,we see deeper into the perils from which only Natalie Portman can save humanity.
The film is based on the book by James VanderMeer. Portman plays a nameless biologist who must go on a secret, dangerous mission. Her team consists of a Psychologist (Jennifer Jason Leigh), a Surveyor (Tessa Thompson), and, apparently, the only named character, Anya (Gina Rodriguez). Oscar Isaac plays the Biologist’s Husband.
Portman won her first Academy Award for “Black Swan” in 2010. Last year, her role in “Jackie” earned her another nomination. Leigh earned her first nomination for Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight” in 2015. Rodriguez won a Golden Globe for her starring role in “Jane the Virgin” on the CW. Tessa Thompson recently starred in “Thor: Ragnarok.” And Oscar Isaac can be seen in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”
But this news apparently did not sit well with writer/director Alex Garland (“Ex Machina”). In an interview for Collider, the Oscar nominee expressed disappointment about his film going to Netflix so soon. He explained that he does not have a problem with Netflix, but that his film was meant to be seen on the big screen. To be clear, the film will have a traditional theatrical release in the US, and will go to Netflix for international markets 17 days later.
“Annihilation” will be in theaters on February 23, 2018.
