Oscars Reveal Shortlist for Best Foreign Language Film

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has just released the names of the nine films still competing for a nomination in the best foreign language film category. Palme d’Or winner “The Square” from Swedish director Ruben Östlund is still standing, but Angelina Jolie’s “First They Killed My Father” is not up for an Oscar nod. Cannes Jury Prize winner “Loveless,” a Russian drama about a divorced couple searching for their missing son is also nominated alongside films from Chile, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Lebanon, Senegal and South Africa. While still a crowded field of nominees, the contenders has been dramatically narrowed down from the record 92 entries submitted to AMPAS this year. The nine on the current shortlist will go on to screenings in New York, LA and London, where voters will cast their ballot for official nominations, according to THR.

The 90th Oscars will be held March 4, 2018 at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre & Highland Center. See the full Foreign Language Film shortlist below.
