The sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Sicario‘ returns to the war against drug trafficking with guns– and helicopters– blazing. Benicio Del Toro (“Star Wars: The Last Jedi”) and Josh Brolin (“Only the Brave”) return as undercover operative Alejandro Gillick and CIA agent Matt Graver in the new trailer for “Sicario 2: Soldado,” which hit the internet on Tuesday.
According to Variety, “Sicario” star Emily Blunt (“The Girl on the Train”) and Villeneuve decided not to return for the upcoming sequel. Instead, Italian director Stefano Sollima (“Suburra”) takes the helm for “Sicario 2: Soldado,” where drug cartels have begun smuggling terrorists across the U.S.-Mexico border. In a new move, Graver (Brolin) enlists Gillick (Del Toro) to create in-fighting among the cartels themselves, killing two birds with one stone. Complete with helicopter explosions, executions and a hell of a lot of guns, the trailer shows what happens when you start a war against everyone. The film will also feature Matthew Modine (“Stranger Things”), Catherine Keener (“Get Out”), Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (“Murder on the Orient Express”) and Jeffrey Donovan (“Burn Notice”), with Taylor Sheridan (“Wind River”) returning to write the script.
The upcoming sequel will have a new studio handling its distribution, after an April agreement between Black Label Media and Sony to give domestic distribution rights to the studio. However, according to Variety, original production company Lionsgate is still hanging on to the film’s international rights. “Sicario” made over $85 million at the worldwide box office against a budget of $30 million.
“Sicario 2: Soldado” premieres June 29, 2018. Watch the trailer below.
