Oklahoma FIlm Critics Circle: Jordan Peele’s ‘Get Out’ Claims Best Film After Special Tiebreaker Vote

The Oklahoma Film Critics Circle (OFCC) has just released their awards for the best films of 2017, with Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” receiving the highest marks for best film, ensemble, director, first feature and original screenplay. The pick for best picture, according to NewsOK, was incredibly difficult this year, with the initial OFCC ballots tying between “Get Out” and Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water.” The latter eventually claimed second place on the OFCC’s top ten list, which featured the usual suspects (“Call Me By Your Name,” “Dunkirk,” “Lady Bird” and more) alongside fan favorite and box office giant “Wonder Woman.”

The OFCC acknowledged both critic and audience opinions during the voting process, with OFCC president Jason Black commending “Get Out” for its originality, adding that it was “a great movie to see in the theater in a crowd.” However, the OFCC clearly did not like “Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri,” voting it the most disappointing film of 2017 with “Justice League” and “The Dark Tower” tying as runner-ups. OFCC secretary/treasurer Jeff Huston expanded upon the decision, saying:

Despite being a movie so perfectly timed for this cultural moment of male pig whistle blowing, ‘Three Billboards’ isn’t really a movie. It’s a premise with caricatures, ones that exist primarily as targets and proxies for vicarious liberal venting. The conflict is potent enough on its own terms; it shouldn’t require such cynical excess.
