There has been some major shakeups in the release schedule for some upcoming “X-Men” films.
Here’s the good news first: “Deadpool 2’s” premiere has been moved up two weeks, from June 1 to May 18. The move pits “Deadpool 2” up against Disney’s “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” which premieres just a week later, according to THR. The choice could be a little risky at the box office, as “Star Wars” films continue to enjoy runaway success even after their opening weekend. Still, the May release date means we’ll get to see Ryan Reynolds live his best life earlier than anticipated.
But here’s the bad news: audiences will have to wait even longer for another Marvel film. Josh Boone’s “The New Mutants,” starring Anya Taylor-Joy (“Split”), Maisie Williams (“Game of Thrones”) and Charlie Heaton (“Stranger Things”), has been moved from an April 13 premiere date to a bow in 2019, a ten month delay. The move avoids putting “X-Men” films against each other, as “Deadpool 2” and “The New Mutants'” previous release dates would’ve seen two “X-Men” films in theaters at the same time. It’s a wise choice, especially if the films have two different takes on Marvel canon, but the wait will be lengthy.
And finally, the worst news: the highly anticipated “Gambit” solo flick starring Channing Tatum has pushed back its premiere date from Feb. 14, 2019 to June 7, 2019, and has lost its director Gore Verbinski (“Pirates of the Caribbean” series). The director’s departure is an amicable one, as Verbinski left only due to scheduling issues, according to Deadline. The delayed release date will give 20th Century Fox some extra time to find a new director without worrying about meeting deadlines. THR notes that studio insiders believe “Gambit” will perform better at the summer box office, as the project reportedly has a comedic edge and revolves around a heist. Still, the premiere date change and loss of Verbinski means we’ll have to wait longer to see Tatum as the Ragin’ Cajun.
“Deadpool 2” will now premiere May 18. “The New Mutants” has pushed its premiere back to Feb. 22, 2019, while “Gambit” will be released June 7, 2019.
