Legendary Pictures released a new trailer for its upcoming film, “Pacific Rim Uprising.”
The film is a follow up to the surprise hit, “Pacific Rim” from 2013. Guillermo del Toro directed the first. Idris Elba and Charlie Hunnam starred in that film, which pitted machines against monsters in a race to save humanity.
The sequel takes place years after the first, with John Boyega in the lead role as Jake Pentecost, the son of Idris Elba’s heroic Stacker. This time around, Jake joins Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) in the fight against the Kaiju threat.
Scott Eastwood, Tian Jing, Adria Arjona, and Charlie Day also star in “Pacific Rim Uprising.”
Guillermo del Toro opted not to direct the sequel so that he could pursue “The Shape of Water.” He did, however, stay on as a producer.
Steven S. DeKnight steps in to direct the sequel. His previous directorial credits include episodes of “Dollhouse,” “Angel,” and “Daredevil.” He also served as a writer and story editor on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Spartacus.”
DeKnight and T.S. Nowlin created the story for “Pacific Rim Uprising.” Both are also credited with writing the screenplay, along with Emily Carmichael and Kira Snyder. Nowlin is best known for writing the “Maze Runner” films, and will next write the screenplay for “Godzilla vs. Kong.”
This is Emily Carmichael’s first feature film. She has previously worked on short films. Kira Snyder is part of the award-winning production team for “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
The film hits theaters on March 23.
