Academy Idol 11 Top 3: Semi-Finals!

Welcome back to Academy Idol 11! We’re entering the Semi-Finals, with only 3 contenders left for our top prize! Which film is going to take home the title of Academy Idol? Let’s jump into the results of last week to find out which films have made our Academy Idol 11 Top 3! Voting is open at the bottom of the page.

First up, let’s review the last round. We were left with 4 films, including some of our Oscar favorites. The last four films in the Awards Circuit Academy Idol race are all unique visions. “Call Me By Your Name” has been a juggernaut in the race, and won five weeks coming into the Top 4. “Lady Bird” from director and writer Greta Gerwig has taken a won several weeks early in the season. These two are safe for the Top 3, and “Call Me By Your Name” takes its sixth victory.

Our bottom two are both extraordinary films in their own right. “Three Billboards Outside, Ebbing Missouri” has been an acting juggernaut. It won SAG Ensemble and projects to win two acting prizes at the upcoming 90th Oscars. It also is the first film since “Bugsy” in 1992 to grab a pair of Supporting Actor nominations at Oscar. On the other hand, “The Shape of Water” combines technical might and strong performances. The film grabbed 3 acting nominations for Sally HawkinsRichard Jenkins, and Octavia Spencer. It also led the field with Oscars 13 nominations.

It was a hard fought round, but we still have to send someone home. This week, we eliminate “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” from the competition. While there was a backlash against the film for a time, Awards Circuit readers continued to embrace the film. After all, the film won 2 ACCAs and finished 4th in Academy Idol. There are clearly still supporters of the film.

With that, we turn to our Final 3. The Academy Idol Top 3: Semifinals will feature three different films that have each won at least one week of the competition. Support has come for each film from different places, but “Call Me By Your Name” seems like the one to beat. However, both “Lady Bird” and The Shape of Water” have strong support. Let’s vote and see who meets in our final matchup.
