Bleecker Street revealed its official trailer for the upcoming drama, “On Chesil Beach.”
The film stars Academy Award-nominee Saoirse Ronan and Billy Howle as newlyweds in 1962 England. As described by the studio’s synopsis:
Following the pair through their idyllic courtship, the film explores sex and the societal pressure that can accompany physical intimacy, leading to an awkward and fateful wedding night.
Saoirse Ronan was nominated for Best Actress for her film, “Lady Bird,” which is also up for Best Picture this year. Her first nomination came at age 13 for her supporting role in Joe Wright’s film, “Atonement.” She followed that up two years ago with a nomination for “Brooklyn” as a lead. She also starred in “Hanna,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” and recently finished filming “Mary, Queen of Scots” with Margot Robbie.
Billy Howle appeared last year in “Dunkirk” and “The Sense of an Ending.” He and Ronan also recently completed filming on the upcoming, “The Seagull,” based on the play by Anton Chekhov.
“On Chesil Beach” also stars Emily Watson, Samuel West, and Anne-Marie Duff.
Ian McEwan adapted his own novel. The author and screenwriter wrote “The Innocent,” “The Good Son,” and the novel, “Atonement.” McEwan did not adapt that script, but writer Christopher Hampton was nominated for the screenplay.
Theatrical director Dominic Cooke makes “On Chesil Beach” his feature film debut. He also directed several episodes of the British television series, “The Hollow Crown.”
The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. It also screened in London as part of the Distributor Slate Days, and was subsequently acquired by Bleecker Street.
“On Chesil Beach” will be in theaters on May 18.
