Production has officially begun in Toronto on Netflix and Constantin Film’s “Polar,” according to a press release Friday afternoon.
The film is an adaptation of the Dark Horse action noir graphic novel “Polar: Came From the Cold” by Victor Santos, which follows the ill-fated retirement of the world’s top assassin, Duncan Vizla. Vizla, aka The Black Kaiser, is set for greener pastures when his former employer marks him as a dangerous liability that must be put down. The tired assassin soon finds himself in a fight for his life as he faces an army of younger, faster, ruthless killers set on silencing him. Will the Black Kaiser survive the last battle of his lengthy career of death and destruction?
Mads Mikkelsen (“Rogue One”) is set to play The Black Kaiser, with Vanessa Hudgens (“Spring Breakers”), Kathryn Winnick (“Vikings”) and Matt Lucas (“Doctor Who”) also starring. Jonas Åkerlund (“Lords of Chaos”) is directing the action film, adapted for the silver screen by Jayson Rothwell (“Silent Night”). Constantin Film’s Robert Kulzer (“Resident Evil” series), Jeremy Bolt (“Death Race”) and Hartley Gorenstein (“Room”) are producing. Constantin Film’s Martin Moszkowicz, Mikkelsen, and Dark Horse Entertainment’s Keith Goldberg and Mike Richards are executive producing. “Polar” is a Canadian/German co-production.
“Polar” is set for a 2019 release on Netflix excepting Canada, Germany and China, where Constantin Film is handling distribution.
