The 2018 Film Independent Spirit Awards just announced their annual picks for the best in film on the eve of the 2018 Oscars. Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” took home top honors for Best Feature and Best Director, while Greta Gerwig snagged the award for Best Screenplay for “Lady Bird.”
Several of this year’s best in film received two awards apiece, with “Call Me by Your Name” winning Best Male Lead Actor (Timothée Chalamet) and Best Cinematography (Sayombhu Mukdeeprom), “I, Tonya” winning Best Supporting Female Actor (Allison Janney) and Best Editing (Tatiana S. Riegel), and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” earning Best Female Lead Actor (Frances McDormand) and Best Supporting Male Actor (Sam Rockwell). The official studio breakdown of Film Independent Spirit Award winners saw NEON and Sony Pictures Places tie for first with three apiece, while Fox Searchlight and Universal Pictures tying for second with two apiece. A24, Amazon Studios, CFI Releasing, Cohen Media Group and Netflix also received one award each.
Film Independent is a non-profit arts organization that produces the annual Spirit Awards and the LA Film Festival; the Spirit Awards pulls double duty as the primary fundraiser for the non-profit’s year-round programs while also honoring artist-driven films made with “an economy of means” by filmmakers whose work embodies diversity, innovation and a unique perspective.
This evening’s ceremony included the announcement of the 2018 Roger and Chaz Ebert Foundation Fellowship, which annually selects an outstanding filmmaker and participant in Project Involve, Film Independent’s diversity and mentorship program. This year’s recipient was writer/director Faren Humes, who received an unrestricted $10,000 grant as part of the honor.
