Production Begins on Marvel’s ‘Captain Marvel’ Starring Brie Larson

Principal photography kicks off Monday on the newest Marvel hero, “Captain Marvel.”

Walt Disney Studios issued a press release announcing that production began in the Los Angeles area, but will also include location shoots in Fresno, California, and in Louisiana.

Marvel Studios’ official synopsis reads:

The story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.  Set in the 1990s, “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Brie Larson stars as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel. This is the first film in the MCU to feature a female superhero in the title role. Larson won an Academy Award two years ago for her leading performance in “Room.” She also appeared last year in “Kong: Skull Island,” “Free Fire,” and “The Glass Castle.”

Samuel L. Jackson will reprise his role as SHIELD leader Nick Fury. Clark Gregg returns to the Marvel films as Agent Phil Coulson. He hasn’t appeared in an MCU film since “The Avengers,” but stars in the “Agents of SHIELD” TV series.  Djimon Hounsou and Lee Pace, both of whom appeared in “Guardians of the Galaxy,” show up here.

The film also stars Ben Mendelsohn (“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”), Lashana Lynch (“Fast Girls”), Gemma Chan (“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”), Algenis Perez Soto (“Sambá”), Rune Temte (“The Last Kingdom”), McKenna Grace (“I, Tonya”), with and Jude Law (” “The Grand Budapest Hotel”).

“Captain Marvel” is co-directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. The pair previously directed “Sugar” and “It’s Kind of a Funny Story,” as well as episodes of “The Big C” and “The Affair.” They co-wrote and Fleck also directed “Half Nelson,” which scored an Academy Award nomination for Ryan Gosling. Boden is also the first woman to direct a film in the MCU.

“Captain Marvel” is set for release on International Women’s Day, March 8, 2019.
