Scoff at the deal between Adam Sandler and Netflix all you like. Sure, the first release in their high profile deal with “The Ridiculous Six,” which isn’t good. The other Sandler comedies under this umbrella so far, “The Do-Over” and “Sandy Wexler,” are a step above the dreck he was doing prior to the deal (cough “Jack and Jill” cough). Furthermore, his release next month, “The Week Of,” looks cute enough. More importantly, though, this enthusiasm from the streaming service to work with the comedian got Noah Baumbach‘s movie “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)” a high profile Cannes Film Festival berth. Netflix has extended their deal with Sandler, and the latest flick to be developed sounds like it has some potential.
Variety is reporting that Sandler will co-star with Jennifer Aniston in “Murder Mystery.” Apparently, Sandler has been looking for a vehicle to team back up with Aniston, after the success of “Just Go With It” in 2011. Furthermore, this action comedy is written by James Vanderbilt and is set to be directed by Kyle Newacheck, which separates it from the films that Sandler just has his longtime directors helm. This is something else. Furthermore, it actually sounds like a fit for both of them.
The article describes the project as such:
“The story follows a New York cop (Sandler) and his wife (Aniston), who become prime suspects in the murder of an elderly billionaire while vacationing in Europe.”
At the very least, the movie sounds better than usual for Sandler. Coming along at the same time as the rumor that Sandler could end up being in the next film by Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie, it seems like the actor is continuing to look to expand his range. “Uncut Gems,” Safdie Brothers project, initially was looking to star Jonah Hill, so you have to presume the role is a baity one. For now, “Murder Mystery” will be a go at Netflix and will likely be another success for them. The service loves the numbers Sandler brings them, so this collaboration seems set to continue for some time.
