Cannes Film Festival Will Premiere ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’

Some exciting news to report. Everyone anticipating both the start of the 2018 Cannes Film Festival and the first reviews of “Solo: A Star Wars Story” are in luck. Cannes is getting a giant blockbuster as part of their gala this year with this Han Solo origin story. It makes perfect sense too. The fest is always on the lookout for giant movies to play, beyond the more independently minded fare that dominates their lineup each and every year. On the other side of the coin, LucasFilm certainly wants audiences to anticipate the flick and not be worried about reshoots and bad buzz. Now, if the premiere goes well, the early word will help make people forget about behind the scenes trouble and just be eager to step back into the “Star Wars” universe.

Deadline broke the story that Cannes will be the spot to launch “Solo: A Star Wars Story” into the universe. Specifically, we’re looking at the screening to take place on May 15th. With all the rumors surrounding what will play at the festival, this is a nice surprise. Programmers always look for some kind of epic to open or close the fest, though this decidedly takes the cake. Directed by Ron Howard (taking over for Phil Lord and Chris Miller), “Solo: A Star Wars Story” features Alden Ehrenreich as the title character, with a great supporting cast that includes Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson, and more.

The report says, in part:

Sources said that the Lucasfilm origin story will premiere in a special screening May 15, before the picture makes its global premiere May 25.

This puts us just a little over a month away from the Cannes premiere. That’s only ten days before it hits theaters, so non festival press will be seeing it shortly thereafter. As such, it’s essentially just a slightly bigger kickoff than usual. We’ll see what the reception to “Solo: A Star Wars Story” is, but the wait just got a little bit shorter.
