GKIDS announced they are partnering with Fathom Events to bring five new animated films to US cinemas in 2018.
GKIDS is the distributor behind Academy Award nominated films including “The Secret of Kills,” “Ernest & Celestine,” and “The Breadwinner.” They also handle all North American distribution for Studio Ghibli, including the annual Studio Ghibli Fest, which is in partnership with Fathom Events.
Their 2018 slate includes five new films. The first is “Fireworks,” from Genki Kawamura. It is the story of two junior high school friends who both have eyes for the same girl. When her mother plans to marry and move them away, she runs away. And she takes just one of her admirers with her. Together, they discover an object with the ability to reset time, but each attempt leads to many different consequences.
Fathom Events CEO Ray Nutt said:
“We are excited to continue our partnership with GKIDS to offer brand new animated content in cinemas nationwide, starting with ‘Fireworks.’ Fans of all ages will have the opportunity to experience the best of animation on the big screen throughout the year in a communal environment.”
GKIDS Ceo Eric Beckman added:
“GKIDS is thrilled to present ‘Fireworks’ to anime and movie fans across the U.S. this summer, and to expand on our successful relationship with Fathom to bring more of the best animated films to the big screen throughout the year. Our goal is to create a unique and exciting cinema event experience for moviegoers to come and enjoy these amazing films together with friends and family.”
The special Fathom Event will run nationwide on July 3, with encore screenings on July 5 and 7. GKIDS will also begin a traditional theatrical run on July 4. Their most recent such collaboration was on “Mary and the Witch’s Flower,” which debuted in theaters this winter.
The rest of their 2018 releases will be announced in coming weeks.
