A24 Pushes Back ‘Under the Silver Lake’ All the Way to December

Last month, the Cannes Film Festival saw the debut of one of the year’s more anticipated independent titles. The movie in question was David Robert Mitchell‘s “Under the Silver Lake.” His follow up to “It Follows,” many had pegged this one as a possible Oscar player. Well, one very mixed reaction at Cannes later, and that may no longer be the case. Still, Oscar potential be damned, it was still pegged to be a notable June release by A24. That, however, is no longer the case. Those of you getting excited for it’s release in three weeks will have to be decidedly more patient.

According to Variety, the film is getting bumped back a whole six months. No longer will A24 be putting it out on June 22nd. Now, it’s a December 7th release. There’s no word on why just yet, but one has to assume that Mitchell will be heading back into the editing room. Written and directed by Mitchell, the flick stars Andrew Garfield and has been described as a hard work to peg down. Also in the cast are Topher Grace, Riley Keough, Zasia Mamet, Jimmi Simpson, and more. Perhaps the extra time will result in a different feeling film, one that meets with more critical acclaim? We shall see in the winter…

Here’s part of what the article had to say:

A24 has pushed back the release date of the Andrew Garfield-starring crime thriller “Under the Silver Lake” from June 22 to Dec. 7 following a mixed critical reception at the Cannes Film Festival.

A24 made the move Friday, three weeks before the movie would have opened. A24 came on to the project in 2016 in the wake of director David Robert Mitchell’s success with the horror thriller “It Follows.”

The move could give Mitchell time to re-cut the 139-minute film.

“Under the Silver Lake” remains one of 2018’s more intriguing movies. Stay tuned for more on this one as we have it.
