It was only a matter of time until someone took the horrifying Harvey Weinstein story and tried to make a project about it. Whether it was going to be a television miniseries, a documentary, or a film, it was always going to happen. The sordid story is just too juicy for every filmmaker to stay away from. Whether that’s a good thing or not is another story, but that’s just the nature of the beast. Well, Brian De Palma seems to be first up, at least with a narrative work, as he’s planning a movie. That being said, it’s not exactly what you’d expect.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, De Palma not only wants to make a Weinstein inspired film, he wants it to be a horror flick. Now, “Brian De Palma makes Harvey Weinstein inspired horror movie” seems like an iffy proposition, but there’s a chance it works. Frankly, if it’s mostly just about a sexual predator in Hollywood, it could be an effective cautionary tale. The less it’s about Weinstein explicitly, the better. Save his actual story for a documentary. The “Blow Out” and “Carrie” filmmaker likely has the skill set for this type of work. He just needs to make sure it’s respectful of Weinstein’s victims.
Here’s a bit of the THR story:
Writer/director Brian De Palma is planning a new horror movie about a sexual predator inspired by Harvey Weinstein.
In an interview with French publication Le Parisien, the director whose horror and suspense credits include Carrie, Dressed to Kill and Blow Out, said he is currently writing a screenplay about the scandal for an unnamed French producer. “My character won’t be named Harvey Weinstein, but it will be a horror film, with a sexual aggressor, and it will take place in the film industry,” he said.
De Palma hasn’t had a hit in a while, so perhaps this is a stab at getting some buzz? We shall see, but if it inspires a strong final product, that will be what we ultimately judge.
