Universal Updates Release Schedule, Adds ‘Green Book’ to Fall Line Up

Universal Pictures has updated its fall release schedule. The studio announced they will release on “Green Book” on November 21. “Welcome to Marwen,” which was previously scheduled for that day, will now move to December.

“Green Book” stars Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali in a comic tale based on the true story of two friends who embark on a road trip in 1962.

The studio describes the film as:

When Tony Lip (Mortensen), an Italian-American bouncer with a seventh-grade education, is hired to drive Dr. Don Shirley (Ali), a world-class African-American pianist on a concert tour from Manhattan to the Deep South, they must rely on the “Negro Motorist Green Book” to guide them to the few establishments that were then safe for Blacks. Confronted with racism, danger—as well as unexpected humanity and humor—they are forced to set aside differences to survive and thrive on the journey of a lifetime.

Linda Cardellini (“Daddy’s Home”) also stars.

Viggo Mortensen is a two-time Academy Award nominee. He earned nominations for his work in “Captain Fantastic” and “Eastern Promises.” He appeared in many films from “GI Jane” to “28 Days” before everyone learned his name in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

Mahershala Ali won his first Academy Award two years ago for the Best Picture winner, “Moonlight.” In the same year, he also appeared in “Hidden Figures,” and the Netflix series, “Luke Cage.” He is set to star in the third season of “True Detective.”

“Green Book” is directed by Peter Farrelly, who is one half of the Farrelly Brothers. The made their name with irreverent comedies like “There’s Something About Mary” and “Dumb and Dumber.” But they also branched into somewhat less raunchy fare with “Shallow Hal” and “Fever Pitch.”
