If you’re Karen Peterson, you’re anxiously awaiting Tom Cruise again feeling the need for speed. Hell, depending on how “Top Gun: Maverick” turns out, we all could be in for a treat. While Val Kilmer has already been confirmed to return alongside Cruise, producers obviously need a younger co-star to add to the mix. Knowing the way movies are made these days, a younger companion to the veteran Cruise is necessary for potential future installments. Well, we now know who the decision makers are centering their attention on for the coveted part. As you might expect, they’re not looking for unknowns either.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the finalists for the role are Nicholas Hoult, Glen Powell, and Miles Teller. Moreover, the role will be the soon of Goose, who Cruise’s Maverick and/or Kilmer’s Iceman will be mentoring. Producers are apparently deciding between these three, after eliminating Austin Butler and Dylan O’Brien at an earlier date. Joseph Kosinski is at the helm for this sequel, with Peter Craig, Justin Marks, and Eric Warren Singer having written the screenplay. Powell and Teller especially seem like great fits here, though an ultimate decision still has to be made.
Here’s a bit from their report:
Nicholas Hoult, Glen Powell and Miles Teller are the frontrunners for a key role in Top Gun 2.
The long-awaited sequel to the seminal 1980s movie once again stars Tom Cruise, reprising his role as the hot-shot pilot with the call sign Maverick.
Joseph Kosinski, who directed Cruise in sci-fi thriller Oblivion, is directing the movie, which is also bringing back Val Kilmer’s rival pilot code-named Iceman.
But the highly coveted role for the young men of Hollywood this time around is the son of Maverick’s wingman and best pal, Goose. Played by Anthony Edwards in the Tony Scott-directed original, the character provided an emotional spine to the movie when he is killed by accident and Maverick blames himself.
The original featured Goose’s son as a young boy, with Meg Ryan playing his mother.
Producers — who include Cruise, Jerry Bruckheimer and Skydance’s David Ellison — have been testing actors for several weeks, winnowing the list down to Hoult, Powell and Teller. Dylan O’Brien and Austin Butler were among those in the mix in a previous stage.
Stay tuned to see who winds up as Goose’s son in this sequel. “Top Gun: Maverick” is currently scheduled to be released next year on July 12th.
