For the past fifteen years, Disney/Pixar has owned the Oscars. However, that dominance has been challenged on a few occasions over the years. Recently, companies like Warner Bros., Paramount, and Universal has restocked their animation departments. This continues to add more competition to Disney and pushes forward the genre considerably. Today we received a trailer for the new animated feature coming from Paramount and Nickelodeon Movies. If animation is as strong as it is in the trailer, look for “Wonder Park” to quickly become a hit.
The IMDB synopsis keeps the story vague and gets right to the point.
A story of a girl, some animals, and a magic amusement park.
The cast for the film is extremely strong and looks to work with the project well. Brianna Denski is a relative newcomer who appears to be voicing June, our main character. An all-star cast is assembled around her, including Kenan Thompson, Mila Kunis, John Oliver, Ken Jeong, Ken Hudson Campbell and Norbert Leo Butz. Jennifer Garner and Matthew Broderick are on board to play June’s parents.
The real surprise from the trailer is the animation. The movie looks to blend some moments of hyperrealism with a cartoonish wonder. The blend works well and delivers some very strong visuals in this teaser. The overall style and story recalls some of the movies from the early 1990’s. “We’re Back: A Dinosaur Story” and “An American Tale” remain popular with moviegoers in their late 20’s and early 30’s. If the movie pushes that nostalgia button, it could break through.
