With minutes to go until the Emmy nominations, “Mary Queen of Scots” is making its move. The film, which dropped character posters yesterday, had been rumored to release a trailer for most of the week. The question for many of us was when would it come out. Turns out, Focus Features placed their trailer drop as the world turned its attention to TV.
The film looks to showcase its two leads in extraordinary fashion. Both Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie look to be bringing their A-game throughout the trailer. The two play Mary Stuart and Elizabeth I respectively, rulers of Scotland and England. The marketing seems to pick up on the thread that the two women ruled the country at a time when it was customary for men to rule kingdoms. With Mary’s encroachment on Elizabeth, it was only a matter of time until the two would reach a breaking point. The result would be tragedy and death.
The truly exciting thing is that it appears the two actresses will be taking on very different personas in the film. Based on the trailer, Ronan looks aggressive, something we haven’t seen out of the actress in her previous nominations. Robbie looks more sympathetic and continues to perform as a disheveled and emotional character. The trailer also showcases strong cinematography, makeup, costumes, and production design elements. If Focus plays the film right, this could be their racehorse for Oscar season.
