Alfonso Cuarón Releases Teaser for Netflix Film “ROMA” on Twitter

Alfonso Cuarón has already taken his place in film history as one of the great directors of his generation. “Gravity” was an experience unlike few others in a cinema, and went on to win 7 Oscars. Cuarón took home best director for his work and has used that clout to make an extremely personal film as his follow-up. His next film is “ROMA,” a black and white film said to be an autobiographical story about a family in Mexico. Today, the famed director took to Twitter to release the first teaser of the film to be released by Netflix.

“ROMA” has already been generating considerable buzz for itself in the past week. Not only did it secure a Centerpiece slot at NYFF, but it is Toronto and Venice bound as well. While the cast does not have any well known talent, Cuarón’s ability to make stars is well documented. Look no further than “Y Tu Mamá También,” which turned Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal on the path to stardom.

What’s striking about the teaser is the way in which Cuarón makes the simple seem elegant. It is the ultimate tease, but simultaneously keys into something about the story that could make it universal. In a time of political strife, and anti-immigration sects popping up throughout the country, a quiet and thoughtful story of growing up in Mexico could be special. Many have wondered if “ROMA” is just what Netflix needs to break through with the academy. With Cuarón’s ability as a visual storyteller put center stage, this bodes well for the project’s chances with Oscar and audiences alike.

“ROMA” will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September. Netflix will distribute.
