The cable network FX continues to push the boundary of what a non-HBO or Netflix network can do. FX is one of the networks to benefit from the boom of television. In many ways, they’re the ones who lit the dynamite on the era of Peak TV. With anthology series like “American Crime Story,” “American Horror Story” and “Fargo” they’ve bet big on the limited series. Now, their next limited series “Fosse/Verdon” will star Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams.
The new series was ordered yesterday by FX as announced by a press release. The show will be produced by Thomas Kail, Steven Levinson, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Based on the book “Fosse” by Sam Wasson, the series will follow the relationship of Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon. The two Broadway stars were among the most talented individuals to ever grace the stage. However, Fosse’s pursuit of greatness pushed the limits of their relationship as well as the face of entertainment.
Hot off his Oscar win for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” Rockwell is looking to strike while the iron is hot, and seems like a dream casting. Meanwhile, Williams gets another shot at playing a true superstar. Williams was able to earn an Oscar nomination for playing Marilyn Monroe and feels like a strong fit here. With Miranda on board, it is clear he can help flesh out the story of the great woman behind the great man. Kail, who is directing the first episode, comes from Broadway as well, winning the Tony for directing “Hamilton” and an Emmy for directing “Grease Live!” Levenson also earned Tonys for “Dear Evan Hanson” in 2017. With so much talent on board, specifically talent coming from Broadway, there is a real sense that Fosse and Verdon’s story is in the best of hands.
