It’s an interesting time to watch HBO in the TV marketplace. HBO was once considered the go to place for quality television, consistently dominating the Emmys. The quality and ratings are still there for many shows, including “Game of Thrones,” “Barry,” and “Insecure.” Despite their success, the recent acquisition of the network by AT&T will make many question what the future of the channel will look like. Today, they continued to prove they can attract big stars to their shows with the trailer debut of “Camping” starring Jennifer Garner.
The teaser doesn’t provide much in the way of plot, but that’s to be expected. Besides, the general concept seems easy enough to understand. It’s someones birthday, and the group want to go camping. When you go camping, weird things happen. Garner looks very Garner-like, providing a straight woman for the insanity that surrounds her.
The deal for Garner seems like a solid one. HBO only gave the first season an 8-episode order, which will allow her to continue to appear in movies. At the same time, it boosts her profile by giving her a comedy on a network with strong shows like “Veep,” “Insecure,” and “Silicon Valley.” It’s a wise move on her end, and she is surrounded by talent. David Tennant, Juliette Lewis, Brett Gelman, and Janicza Bravo all co-star. The series is also based on a British series of the same name and was created by Lena Dunham and Jennifer Konner. With the talent in front of the camera and behind the camera, “Camping” could easily become a mid-sized to big hit for HBO.
