Ava DuVernay has quickly become one of the most exciting filmmakers to watch in Hollywood. Whether she’s working on film or television, DuVernay has become a force in the industry. Not only has she pushed for more stories and films from people of color, but she’s been an open advocate for women as well. The director continues to show why she’s a transformative figure in the industry. One of her next projects will be a dramatic retelling of the “Central Park Five” story for Netflix. We now know some of the leads in the upcoming limited series.
Deadline reports six actors joined the cast of DuVernay’s “Central Park Five.” DuVernay cast Chris Chalk, Ethan Heriesse, Marquis Rodriguez, Caleel Harris, Freddy Miyares, and Justin Cunningham. Miyares and Cunningham are new to film and television, while the rest have shown up in various projects. Chalk probably has had the biggest stage playing Lucius Fox for “Gotham” on Fox. They join established stars like Michael K. Williams, Vera Farmiga, John Leguizamo, and Niecy Nash on the series.
The story of the Central Park Five continues to be one of injustice in America. In 1989, a white woman jogging in Central Park was brutally raped. The NYPD arrested five boys (4 Black, 1 Hispanic). Reports surfaced a “confession” was coerced. Each went to jail for between 6 and 13 years. In 2002, the true rapist revealed himself. Then it became apparent DA withheld evidence, including a DNA test, that would have freed them in 1990. This remains a harrowing story of prejudice in America. DuVernay is an amazing person to bring this story to life, and Netflix feels like the perfect place to for this show to land.
