How do you follow up one of the most acclaimed television shows of all time? If you’re Vince Gilligan, you jump back into the world of “Breaking Bad” with “Better Call Saul.” For David Chase, the answer was to make a small movie, “Never Fade Away” about a rock band in the 1960s. For “Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner, he chose a little more showy experiment. Rather than rest on his laurels, Weiner jumped into the anthology series game with “The Romanoffs” featuring literally dozens of marquee names in the industry. Today, Amazon released a trailer for the limited series.
“The Romanoffs” follows a group of people spread around the world that believe they are descendants of the famed Russian Family. Following the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, there were questions about what happened to the royal family. Despite history proving the Romanoff family was executed, hundreds of people claimed they were related to the overthrown family. Clearly, Weiner thought this concept was hilarious and funny.
The teaser here shows quite a bit more humor than one might expect from the creator of “Mad Men.” However, when “Mad Men” was at its best, it was often one of the funniest films shows on television. Whether the show ran over a man’s foot with a John Deere mower, or a lost his mind and pulled a Van Gogh, there was always a dark comedy at the center of the show. If Weiner can channel that energy into “Romanoffs” you can expect something very special. Considering 90% of the cast of “Mad Men” show up here, along with dozens of other good comedic actors, expect a more “Veep” style to the comedy here. With the prestige background, this is surely fodder for the Emmys in 2019.
