Two of the rising stars of British film over the past few years have been Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne. Each actor has taken on roles that satiate our want for more prestige pictures while balancing their schedule out with big budget films. Their collaboration on “The Theory of Everything” helped each receive an Oscar nomination, with Redmayne winning his. The two have very much set high goals for themselves as they continue to climb within the industry. However, few cinephiles probably thought they would literally try to climb above the clouds. Yet, based on our first look at “The Aeronauts” from Amazon and director Tom Harper that appears to be the case.
According to Deadline, the filming of “The Aeronauts” is officially underway in the UK. The feature takes place in 1862 as two people try to mount a flying expedition that will take them higher than anyone in history. Redmayne plays a young scientist James Glaisher who is both ambitious and adventurous. Jones plays a young widow, Amelia Wren, who has tons of money to back up the expedition. The two embark together on the adventure, which quickly becomes a fight for survival.
The two-hander seems intriguing on its surface. If nothing else, it has the talent to sustain a movie for upwards of an hour and a half. Redmayne picked up another nomination for “The Danish Girl” in 2015. He also leads the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise, and appeared in “Les Miserables” in 2012. Jones headlined “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” and will star in “On the Basis of Sex” later this fall. The two are apparently doing their own stunts for the film, which brings them over 2000 feet into the air. If it seems risky, it is. It’ll be interesting to see what comes of the film.
