The Scotish fight for independence has come to the big screen a couple of times before. The most well-known version came with “Braveheart” in 1995, which won Best Picture at the Oscars. It also announced Mel Gibson as a director in Hollywood. Even “Outlander” has covered the topic of the Jacobite risings in the 1690s and 1700s. David Mackenzie, best known for directing best picture nominee “Hell or High Water,” will take a crack at the story of Robert the Bruce. Today, Netflix released the trailer for “The Outlaw King,” set to open Toronto Film Festival.

Mackenzie’s looking to bring another brutal view of the battles between Scotland and England. It’s clear from the first frames of the trailer that will be the case. The film looks like an action movie in some stages, while hitting many of the same notes of “Braveheart.” Freedom and the fight for it will undeniably be at the center of “The Outlaw King,” so it may become a populist film to support.

There are some Oscar-worthy crafts to consider in the trailer as well. The costume design, in particular, stands out, as does the production design. There are some strong moments of cinematography in the trailer as well. The film is set to open the Toronto Film Festival in 2018, which shows that a lot of eyes are going to be on the film. With Netflix pushing the period drama to a prime slot for its premiere, they obviously believe in the film. Whether the movie becomes a hit with audiences, critics, or both, it’s going to be interesting to see what Mackenzie brings to the story of one of Scotland’s most famous historical figures.

What do you think of “The Outlaw King” trailer? Do you think that Mackenzie has a hit on his hand?
