One of the most successful anthology series of the past decade has been “American: Horror Story” from Ryan Murphy. Murphy was able to capitalize on a new willingness for big stars to jump into limited shows for small commitments with high upside. Just as Jessica Lange, who has received 5 Emmy nominations and two wins since 2012. “Horror Story” divides most critics and audiences as it varies greatly in quality. Despite this, the show has built a strong following, allowing FX to go all out this year. The new mash-up season, “American Horror Story: Apocalypse” combines two of the shows most acclaimed seasons. “Murder House” kicked off the series to critical acclaim, while “Coven” upped the dramatic elements of the show. The 1st and 3rd seasons of the show featured all-star casts, and now, we’re going to see what happened to the characters in the aftermath.
Recently, several teasers have hit the web. The teasers don’t give us a lot, but they do begin to showcase a different kind of apocalypse. While most assumed the apocalypse would come with a fire and brimstone feel, the early footage doesn’t seem to indicate that’s the way the show will go. Instead, we’re looking at the beginnings of a nuclear annihilation. It’s a wise move for the series to take, and could lend itself to bigger discussions.
Not one to shy away from controversy, Ryan Murphy has long brought his politics into the show. It’s been one of the exciting things about the show, culminating in the very loud “AHS: Cult” last season. The season featured strong performances, but this season has the feeling it could be bigger and better. It’ll be interesting to see if Murphy uses the Trump connections from last season to explain why the Apocalypse is upon us. Feels likely.
