AMPAS Drops the Popular Film Category (For 91st Oscars) and Gives More Info on Changes

Today the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science, aka AMPAS, released more information on the various topics facing the 91st Academy Awards. Chief among these changes was the original announcement of the additional Popular Film category. There was also the news that several categories would no longer be presented live. Today, AMPAS gave more information on the upcoming changes, as well as new information for the 2020 Oscars.

Most pressing for many is the official word that AMPAS will not roll out the Popular Film category. Rather than cancel the category outright, the Academy believes “it merits more study” before the new Oscar category goes into effect. This seems obvious, especially given the backlash that came from the original announcement.

Second, and now far more important, is the announcement that between 6 and 8 categories will be pushed out of the live show. The Academy will discuss which categories will be presented during the commercial breaks with the showrunners each year. This means that at a minimum, 25% of the categories will receive their Oscars during commercials.

Finally, the Academy announced new dates for the 92nd Oscars. The result is a clear look at how the season will now shake out. Chief among these dates is the window for nominations runs from January 2nd to January 7th. The 2nd stage of the Oscars concludes on February 4th, 2019, this keeps the PGA and DGA awards before the voting on the winners for Oscar. The official dates are below.
