The visionary director Yorgos Lanthimos has established himself as somewhat of an icon. His absurdist style has blended extremely well with brutality. There’s a coldness present in many of his films that feels unique to his palette. Yet despite, that distance, his work often pushes audiences to think and contemplate horrific circumstances. The humor beneath the surface of his work, or sometimes front and center, continues to make him a popular director worldwide. One of the films that grabbed considerable acclaim coming out of Telluride and Venice Film Festival was “The Favourite” from Lanthimos. The period piece may have thrown three acting contenders into the race, to say nothing of Lanthimos and his below-the-line team. Today, they’ve released a new trailer for the upcoming work.
The three characters center to the film are undeniably Emma Stone, Olivia Colman, and Rachel Weisz. Over the course of the trailer, we see standout moments from each. All three are well-regarded actresses, with Stone and Weiss already holding Oscar trophies. Yet Colman is the actress with the most buzz coming out of the festivals. Some are going so far as to predict her as the winner of whichever category she submits for. It appears to be quite the performance. Check out Mark Johnson’s Telluride review here!
Lanthimos may have only one nomination with Oscar (for writing “The Lobster“) but he has flirted with the awards group before. “Dogtooth” picked up a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” felt like it was in contention all of 2017. Now, Lanthimos may have his breakthrough hit. Considering his wacky and violent style, this may not be commonplace for Lanthimos. Fingers crossed he can get what he deserves in the wacky and crazy tale.
